Retirement is a time to discover a new lifestyle – one that embraces independence, new interests and friends, and fuss-free living.

Most older Australians feel younger than they are – around 75% don’t feel their age according to National Seniors Australia research. And rather than fading into the background, modern retirees are following their dreams, enjoying the finer things in life and staying active.

The National Seniors Growing older, feeling younger study found the older Aussies are, the more likely they are to feel younger. Having friends, being in good health and having a sense of purpose all helped them turn back the clock.

Being part of a community with a zest for life also matters, and this is the essence of RetireAustralia’s new vertical community, The Verge at Burleigh GC.

The coastal development is designed for the latest generation of over 65s with low maintenance apartments located close to beaches, a golf club, shopping centre and eateries.

So, how do you embrace full-time living when full-time work comes to an end?

1. Stay social

Keeping connected to neighbours, friends and family is part of staying happy and healthy, whatever your age.

The Verge is alongside the 10th fairway of Burleigh Golf Club, so residents can catch up on the green or enjoy the view from the clubhouse’s terrace bar and cafe.

Residents can also enjoy some retail therapy at nearby Pacific Fair or make the most of the garden and rooftop BBQ areas, which provide a great place to mingle.

“I’m looking for the benefits of apartment living with the advantages of being with a like-minded community of a similar age,” says future resident, Lorelei Bache.

“Once the entire complex is developed, there will be a lot of people whom I’ll have much in common with.”

2. Get active

The Verge Wellness Hub will help residents keep fit and it includes a gym plus group fitness classes for those who need a bit of motivation.

Burleigh Beach is only a short walk away, so residents can start (or end) their day with a stroll along the stunning coastline.

“The Verge provides the perfect indoor-outdoor lifestyle,” says Lorelei.

“Having lived in this area between Broadbeach and Burleigh for 30 years, it’s the ideal lifestyle area.”

3. Be independent

When life doesn’t go according to plan, people need a little support but that doesn’t have to mean giving up your lifestyle.

Having access to in-home services such as personal care, clinical care and help with household chores and gardening can keep you well cared for in your own space.

At The Verge at Burleigh GC, residents will have access to flexible independent living options tailored to their needs.

4. Make the most of low-maintenance living

The number of grey nomads exploring Australia and the rest of the world is on the rise and apartment living in a secure community offers these travellers peace of mind when they are far from home.

Functional interiors that are easy to clean and free-flowing floorplans simplify living, so residents have more time to enjoy what matters.

“The apartments are going to be just lovely with a beautiful aspect close to the beach,” says Lorelei.

“As I see it, the benefits of vertical living are security – you’re able to lock up and leave and have no worries.”

5. Find yourself a fur friend

Research shows pets help older adults cope with mental and physical health issues and around 75% of 50 to 80-year-olds believe their pets reduce stress and give them a sense of purpose.

6. Enjoy the finer things in life

Burleigh’s latest hub for art, music, design and culture is a short walk away at Miami Marketta. Indulge in street food from across the globe, take in some live music or browse the creative wares at the boutique stalls.

Or sample some of the Gold Coast’s best coffee in Burleigh’s bustling local cafes. And residents can look their best at all times by paying a quick visit to the onsite beauty salon.

“This place has everything that I need,” says Lorelei.

“It ticks all the boxes.”
